Merck Inserts Itself into Cultural Moments to Address Chronic Health Issues in HIV Community
Pharmaceutical giant Merck is expanding its marketing efforts to address chronic health issues among people living with HIV. The company's new initiative, 'Your Hive of Whole Health,' aims to provide support networks for individuals dealing with physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being.
The campaign was launched in conjunction with the Netflix reboot of A Different World, which features actress Debbie Allen as a spokesperson for Merck's initiative. According to Conrod Kelly, U.S. HIV business unit head at Merck, the company sought to tie its messaging to the cultural moment.
Merck found that more than 50% of people living with HIV are over 50 years old, and by 2030, this number will jump to 70%. Kelly notes that while advancements in HIV treatment have led to longer lifespans, individuals are now facing other health conditions, such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes.
The company is investing in developing therapeutic products complementary to people living with HIV. The goal of the campaign is to foster agency among individuals living with HIV and provide options for their overall well-being.
