Merck Introduces Sustainable Bio-Based HPLC Solvents for Labs
Merck, a leading research and biotech company, has introduced a new range of bio-based HPLC solvents, marking a significant step toward sustainability in laboratory practices. The new portfolio includes high-purity acetonitrile, methanol, and ethanol, all derived from renewable feedstocks. These solvents are designed for HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography) and LC-MS (liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry) applications, offering laboratories an eco-friendly alternative to traditional fossil-fuel-based solvents.
The bio-based solvents provide a notable environmental benefit, boasting an average 25.9% lower CO₂e (carbon dioxide equivalent) impact compared to their fossil-fuel-based counterparts. This reduction helps laboratories lower their greenhouse gas emissions and align with sustainability goals without sacrificing analytical performance.
One of the key advantages of Merck’s new solvents is their compatibility with existing workflows. Designed as drop-in replacements, they can be integrated into current HPLC and LC-MS methods and instrumentation without requiring any modifications or redevelopment of analytical methods. This ease of adoption makes the transition to more sustainable practices seamless for laboratories.
