Merck KGaA has announced its plans to acquire Silence Therapeutics Plc in a deal valued at approximately $1.1 billion. The German pharmaceutical company will pay $20 for each American depositary receipt of Silence Therapeutics, marking a 130% premium over the biotech firm's closing price on Friday. The acquisition is aimed at strengthening Merck KGaA's capabilities in the rare diseases sector.
The transaction is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions. Merck KGaA's move underscores its strategic focus on expanding its portfolio in specialized therapeutic areas.
