Merck-Moderna Cancer Vaccine Cuts Melanoma Recurrence by Half
A groundbreaking Phase 3 trial has shown that Merck and Moderna's personalized mRNA cancer vaccine, intismeran autogene, can reduce melanoma recurrence by half when used in combination with pembrolizumab. The vaccine works by identifying unique mutations in a patient's tumor DNA and producing synthetic mRNA molecules that instruct the immune system to attack those specific targets.
The INTerpath-001 trial enrolled 1,137 patients with high-risk melanoma who had undergone surgery to remove their tumors. At an interim analysis, the combination of intismeran plus pembrolizumab demonstrated statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvements in recurrence-free survival and distant metastasis-free survival compared to pembrolizumab alone.
The trial's results mark a significant milestone for cancer immunotherapy, with many experts hailing it as one of the most monumental advancements in dermatology.
