Merck and Moderna's experimental personalized cancer vaccine has shown promise in its first late-stage trial, according to recent results. The mRNA-based shot, combined with Merck's immunotherapy Keytruda, met key goals in a Phase 3 trial involving over 1,100 patients with higher-risk or advanced melanoma.

The study found that the vaccine extended the time patients remained cancer-free before their melanoma returned, compared to those treated only with Keytruda. Additionally, it reduced the risk of cancer spreading to other body parts.

Merk and Moderna plan to discuss the results with regulatory agencies in the next few months. The Phase 3 study will continue to assess other outcomes, including overall survival benefit.
