Merck-Moderna Vaccine Combats Melanoma Recurrence

A new mRNA vaccine being developed by Merck and Moderna could provide a breakthrough in treating melanoma patients. The innovative approach involves removing the tumor, testing it for genetic mutations, and creating an mRNA vaccine tailored to each patient's unique genetic profile.

The vaccine is administered with the immunotherapy drug Keytruda, which works together to stimulate the immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells. Dr. Katherine Chang, an assistant professor of ear, nose and throat surgery at LSU Health Shreveport, highlighted the promising results from clinical trials.

Participants who received the vaccine and subsequent immunotherapy treatment showed significantly lower rates of recurrence and higher long-term cure rates compared to those without the vaccine. Merck and Moderna plan to file for regulatory approval in the coming months, but a specific timeline has not been disclosed.
