Merck Scores New Oncology Clearance as Pipeline Expands Beyond Keytruda
Merck, known for its flagship immunotherapy Keytruda, has made significant strides in recent days. The US regulator cleared a combination of Welireg and Lenvima for certain previously treated adults with advanced renal cell carcinoma carrying a clear-cell component. This approval adds to the company's oncology lineup and extends its franchise beyond Keytruda.
The clearance broadens the reach of Welireg, an oral therapy, when paired with Lenvima in a difficult treatment setting. Renal cell carcinoma remains a demanding area of oncology, and expanded combination options give clinicians additional routes for patients whose disease has progressed after earlier therapy.
Merck also reported that remigromig, a tri-specific agonist, met the primary endpoint in a pivotal study of adults with diabetic macular edema. The result stretches the company's reach into ophthalmology and could differentiate the candidate in a crowded field if confirmed through full development.
