Pharmaceutical giant Merck has reported a strong second-quarter sales performance, exceeding analysts' expectations and lifting its full-year revenue forecast. The company's blockbuster cancer drug Keytruda drove much of this growth, with sales rising 5% to $8.37 billion.

The key contributor here is the newer under-the-skin version of Keytruda, known as QLEX, which generated $463 million in revenue during the quarter. According to CFO Caroline Litchfield, QLEX has already achieved a 'double-digit' share of US Keytruda sales and could reach 30% to 40% adoption by the end of 2027.

While Merck took a $5.7 billion accounting charge related to its acquisition of Terns Pharmaceuticals, which pushed the company to a reported loss, investors focused on the sustained growth of Keytruda. This drug is becoming increasingly important for Merck's revenue, and analysts will be watching closely to see if QLEX can maintain this pace.

The company has raised its 2026 revenue outlook to $66.3 billion-$67.3 billion, driven by the continued success of Keytruda. With QLEX showing promise, it's clear that Merck is shifting focus towards oncology and seeking to capitalize on growing demand for cancer treatments.
