Merck's Personalised Cancer Vaccine Shows Promising Results Against Melanoma
Merck and Moderna have announced promising Phase 3 results for an experimental personalised cancer vaccine, intismeran autogene. This treatment is designed to help prevent melanoma from returning by targeting characteristics specific to a patient's tumour.
The combination of the personalised vaccine and Keytruda showed statistically significant improvements in both recurrence-free survival (RFS) and distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) compared with Keytruda alone. The trial will also continue to evaluate other outcomes, including overall survival.
According to Dr. Kunal Sharma, Vice President and Head of Integrated Onco-Pathology at Agilus Diagnostics, the significance of this approach lies in its ability to target characteristics particular to a patient's cancer and stimulate the immune system to kill cancer cells with specific genetic mutations.
