Merck's Remigromig Shows Promise Against Diabetic Vision Loss
An experimental eye injection developed by Merck has shown promise in treating diabetic macular edema (DME), a condition that can cause serious vision loss.
The drug, remigromig (MK-3000), met its main goal in the Phase 2b/3 BRUNELLO trial, demonstrating non-inferiority to the established treatment ranibizumab after 52 weeks.
The study involved 984 adults with DME, who received either one of two doses of remigromig or ranibizumab. Both doses met the primary efficacy objective by showing non-inferiority to 0.5mg ranibizumab for average change in best-corrected visual acuity.
Merk said both doses were generally well tolerated, but reported higher rates of proliferative diabetic retinopathy, vitreous haemorrhage and treatment discontinuation due to adverse events among patients receiving remigromig compared with those receiving ranibizumab.
