Merck's Remigromig Shows Promise in Diabetic Macular Edema Trial
Merck's (MRK) recent announcement of positive topline data from its pivotal Phase 2b/3 BRUNELLO trial has sparked renewed interest in the company's investment narrative. The trial showed that the investigational antibody remigromig matched ranibizumab on 52-week visual acuity outcomes in adults with diabetic macular edema, with both doses generally well tolerated but with higher rates of certain ocular adverse events.
This result highlights Merck's efforts to build a retinal disease franchise beyond oncology and may broaden its future revenue mix across ophthalmology indications such as DME, neovascular age-related macular degeneration, and retinal vein occlusion. However, the biggest short-term catalyst still sits in oncology and newer launches like WINREVAIR and CAPVAXIVE.
The key risk remains pipeline execution falling short of offsetting pricing and competition. Merck's growth plan depends on many shots on goal, with uneven outcomes along the way. The company's narrative projects $75.1 billion revenue and $22.4 billion earnings by 2029, assuming 4.1% yearly revenue growth and an earnings increase of about $19.2 billion from $3.2 billion today.
