Meta is making a significant change to its internal communication platform by switching from Google Chat to Slack. The decision was made due to Slack's superior handling of AI agents, which are increasingly crucial for Meta's operations. In a memo sent on Monday, chief AI officer Alexandr Wang explained that the company first compared both platforms and initially chose Google Chat because it integrated well with Google Workspace.

However, since then, AI has evolved significantly, and it has become clear how essential agents will be to Meta's future development. Wang acknowledged that this second switch in a year will be 'disruptive and painful' for employees but justified the decision due to Slack's stronger agentic capabilities. The rollout will occur in two phases, with certain teams gaining early access starting September 15 and the rest of the company following on September 29.

This move is a significant win for Salesforce, which acquired Slack for $27.7 billion in 2021 and has since been building agent features into its platform. The shift highlights the growing importance of AI agents in the industry and will likely have implications for other companies operating in this space.
