Meta and Microsoft cut back on Anthropic’s Claude Code usage
Meta Platforms and Microsoft are both scaling back their employees' use of Anthropic's Claude Code, according to a report from The Information. Meta has reportedly cut Claude Code usage nearly in half, with the number of employees using the tool declining to about 30,000 from 60,000 earlier this year. Despite this reduction, Meta spent over $105 million on Claude Code in a recent 28-day period.
Microsoft has also reduced its spending on Anthropic's AI tools by about one-third, encouraging employees to use more in-house AI tools instead. The tech giant began reducing its dependence on Claude Code as far back as May, aiming to draw down employee token spending and integrate more of its own models into its applications.
Meta has developed its own coding assistants, including Muse Code, which it began testing with external customers in August. The company has also created MetaCode for internal use. Meanwhile, Anthropic's recent initial public offering prospectus revealed that two customers represent approximately 25% of its revenue, though it did not name those customers.
