Mexico's Retail Market Attracts Record Investment from Global Players
International retailers are pouring capital into Mexico's retail market through new stores, distribution centers, e-commerce, automation, and artificial intelligence. Major players like Walmart, Home Depot, Costco, IKEA, Falabella, and Amazon are directing investments toward key consumer and industrial markets.
The investment is not limited to physical store openings; it's expanding into logistics, technology, supply chains, and smaller-format locations. For instance, Walmart plans to invest MX$43 billion (US$2.37 billion) in Mexico and Central America in 2026, with about 42% of the investment earmarked for remodeling and maintaining existing stores.
Home Depot is also increasing its presence in Mexico by investing MX$4.788 billion (US$267.16 million) in 2026, planning to open three new stores and reaching a total of 145 locations. The company aims to source 100% of its products from Mexican suppliers by 2028.
Costa is expanding through large-format warehouse clubs, with recent investment announcements concentrated in Aguascalientes and Queretaro. IKEA's Mexican strategy combines physical stores with nationwide e-commerce, illustrating another dimension of international retail expansion.
