Michael Jackson Biopic Breaks Box Office Records, Reignites Global Interest
Nearly two decades after his death, Michael Jackson's name continues to dominate Google searches in 2026. The surge in interest can be attributed to the biopic 'Michael,' which premiered in April and has broken multiple box office records.
The film, directed by Antoine Fuqua, tells the story of Jackson's life from his childhood with the Jackson 5 to his rise as a solo artist, concluding during his 1988 'Bad' World Tour. With a cast that includes Jaafar Jackson, who plays the title role in his feature-film acting debut, and Colman Domingo and Nia Long as his parents, Joe and Katherine Jackson.
'Michael' has achieved unprecedented success, opening with $217.4 million worldwide, the largest opening weekend for a biopic, and surpassing 'Bohemian Rhapsody' to become the highest-grossing music biopic of all time. By July, it had crossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office, making it the first biographical film in history to reach that milestone.
The film's success has also translated into renewed streaming interest, with Jackson notching four entries in the top 50 of the Hot 100 in a single week, led by 'Billie Jean' at number 17. Billboard attributed this surge directly to the wave of renewed streaming activity following the film's release.
Lionsgate is reportedly considering greenlighting an additional film to continue exploring later chapters of Jackson's life and career, given the momentum generated by the first installment.
