Michigan Commission Approves DTE-Google Deal for Data Center Energy Costs
The Michigan Public Service Commission has approved a new electricity contract between DTE Energy and Google for the proposed 'Project Cannoli' data center in Van Buren Township. The 20-year agreement requires Google to pay at least 80% of the electricity it uses, even if it consumes less than expected.
The commission claims this deal protects other DTE customers from shouldering the costs, which could lead to lower electricity bills for Michigan residents and businesses over the life of the contract. According to DTE, Google will cover its own energy expenses, allowing other customers to avoid paying the project's costs.
Google would also need to provide a lump-sum payment if it were to abandon the project early, as per the contract terms. The agreement aims to bring new clean energy resources to Michigan's grid, potentially reducing electricity costs for households and businesses in the long run.
