Mickey Mouse Matches Up Astronauts
Anita Mitchell's life was forever changed after she moved to Cocoa Beach, Florida. Her experience working for Walt Disney World and her subsequent marriage to Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell are just two of the many fascinating stories in her book 'You Don't Look Like an Astronaut's Wife!'
Mitchell, who is now 85 years old, grew up in a small town in Ohio. She was encouraged by her parents to ask questions and explore her curiosity about the world around her. As she looked up at the sky as a child, Mitchell wondered what was up there.
After her first marriage ended in divorce, Mitchell moved to Cocoa Beach with her three children. She landed a job selling ads for WEZY radio station, which was owned by Gannett at the time. It was during this period that she also worked at Lee Caron's Carnival Club, a popular night club known for its giant pink fiberglass elephant out front.
Mitchell's big break came when she decided to bring the cast of 'I Dream of Jeannie' to town. She picked up the phone and made it happen, surprising everyone with her initiative. The event was a huge success, and Mitchell became known for her ability to bring people together and create memorable experiences.
Mitchell's life took another dramatic turn when she met Edgar Mitchell at the Moonwalk Festival Parade. Mickey Mouse had set them up, but Anita initially declined Ed's invitation. However, after some persistence from Mickey, they finally met and started dating. The couple married in 1972 and were together for 12 years before separating amicably.
