Micron Nears Nvidia in Market Cap as Memory Chips Take Center Stage
Memory chip maker Micron Technology has surged to become one of the world's largest companies in just over a year, catching many investors by surprise. With a market capitalization of over $1 trillion, Micron is now within striking distance of Nvidia's $5.5 trillion market cap.
The key difference between these two tech giants is their growth rates and valuations. While Nvidia has posted respectable revenue growth of 106% year-over-year in its fiscal 2027 second quarter, Micron delivered a whopping 346% increase to $41.9 billion in its fiscal 2026 third-quarter.
Both companies have high net profit margins above 60%, but Micron's is slightly higher than Nvidia's. Furthermore, Micron trades at a significantly lower valuation, with a forward P/E ratio of just 6 compared to Nvidia's 25. This means that Micron's shares would need to roughly quadruple for the company to match Nvidia's valuation.
Elon Musk has even highlighted the importance of memory hardware in AI infrastructure, stating that the global shortage of memory is 'the limiting factor' to AI build-out. With its strong fundamentals and attractive valuation, Micron may be well-positioned to outperform Nvidia for some time and potentially become the world's most valuable company.
