Microsoft 365 Outage Hits BGSU Students Due to Authentication Error
Microsoft's Microsoft 365 services experienced an outage on August 31st, affecting students at Bowling Green State University (BGSU). The disruption caused issues with accessing email, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams. Jong Kwan 'Jake' Lee, a BGSU computer science professor, attributed the problem to an authentication error between Microsoft and the university.
According to Lee, this type of issue occurs when there is a mismatch in digital certificates, which are essentially digital keys that authenticate access to services. He explained that systems update these certificates periodically to prevent hacking attempts. However, if the certificate expires or is not updated correctly, it can cause authentication problems.
The outage caused inconvenience for students, but Lee noted that Microsoft typically resolves such issues by incrementally testing solutions on smaller sets of servers before applying them to larger ones. He emphasized that there's no guarantee against future outages, but measures will be taken to prevent similar incidents.
