Microsoft Abandons Hellblade Developer Despite New Game Announcement
Ninja Theory, the developer of Hellblade, is at risk of closure after two deals to save the studio fell through. Microsoft announced in June that it would release Senua, the third game in the Hellblade series, but now says it will begin consultation with employees on a proposed closure.
The Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty said in a blog post that 'unfortunately, two separate agreements for Ninja Theory fell through.' This means the studio may shut down, despite Microsoft's earlier announcement of Senua. The reason for this reversal is likely due to Microsoft's plan to focus on its big franchises such as Minecraft and Halo.
Ninja Theory's Hellblade games have struggled commercially, which may be contributing to Microsoft's decision. However, the studio had been working on new projects, including a game announced in June that was met with excitement from fans. If Ninja Theory closes, it will be a blow to the gaming industry and its fans.
Microsoft's willingness to part with IP, as seen with Double Fine and Compulsion navigating their way to independence, may also play a role in this decision. The tech giant is doubling down on its big franchises in an effort to raise revenue and profitability. It remains to be seen whether Senua will ever see the light of day.
