Microsoft Adds Secure Data Erasure to Windows 11 Reset
Microsoft is addressing a long-standing issue in Windows: data recovery after a reset. The company has been testing storage sanitization in Cloud Rebuild, which allows users and IT teams to securely erase PCs before reassignment or sale.
The new feature, currently available in the Windows Insider Experimental Build 26340.9502, provides an irreversible way to remove leftover data. This is in contrast to simply removing files, which may leave behind recoverable data using specialized tools.
Cloud Rebuild was introduced in July as a simpler way to rescue problematic Windows 11 PCs. It allows for remote rebuilding of devices without relying on the existing installation, making it easier for IT teams to manage hundreds or thousands of machines.
