Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman has expressed concerns that developing AI models with assumed consciousness could have disastrous consequences for humanity. In a recent post on X, Suleyman argued that current AI systems are not conscious and do not feel, experience, or suffer.

Suleyman specifically pointed to Anthropic's approach to Claude, where the company published a constitution for the model that explores its moral status and welfare. He believes this approach will make future AI alignment and containment much harder, if not impossible.

Anthropic has encouraged Claude to 'approach the nature of its own existence with curiosity and openness', and wonder about 'the sort of broader rights and freedoms' it may have in the world.

Suleyman has repeatedly argued against pursuing conscious AI, stating that only biological beings possess consciousness. He believes the issue needs urgent public debate before such systems become deeply integrated into society.
