Microsoft AI Chief Warns of Regulatory Divide on Autonomous Systems
Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman is pushing for stronger safeguards around increasingly autonomous AI systems, putting one of the industry's biggest developers at odds with the White House's preference for narrower regulation.
The debate matters because tougher rules could raise development costs and slow deployment, while clearer standards could also reduce legal and reputational risks as AI becomes a larger part of Microsoft's growth engine.
Suleyman argued that competition with China should not become an excuse for avoiding AI safety measures. He wants advanced models to remain interruptible, auditable, and ultimately under human control, an approach consistent with Microsoft AI's recently published Humanist AI Code of Conduct.
