Microsoft and Nvidia Team Up to Accelerate Nuclear Energy with AI
At CERAWeek 2026 in Houston, Microsoft and Nvidia showcased their collaboration to leverage AI for advancing nuclear technology. The tech giants believe their AI tools can streamline complex nuclear projects, reducing delays and costs without compromising safety. Their approach involves shifting from customized engineering to repeatable, reference-based delivery while maintaining regulatory standards. AI will help unify data, detect inconsistencies, and provide real-time tracking of costs and timelines through simulations and digital twin technology.
The partnership has already seen success with several nuclear companies. Aalo Atomics saved $80 million annually by using Microsoft’s generative AI to cut its permitting process by 92 percent. Southern Nuclear integrated Microsoft Copilot across its reactor fleet, and Idaho National Laboratory automated engineering and safety report creation. These advancements highlight AI's potential to transform the nuclear industry.
CERAWeek featured discussions on nuclear energy, with Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Ho Nieh and Energy Secretary Chris Wright among the speakers. Wright emphasized the progress of the Department of Energy’s Reactor Pilot Program, aiming to have three next-generation nuclear reactors operational by July 4, as directed by a presidential executive order. This milestone underscores the growing momentum in nuclear energy innovation.
