Microsoft and UFT Reach Deal for Improved AI Privacy Protections in Schools

The United Federation of Teachers (UFT) has reached an agreement with Microsoft to improve AI privacy protections in schools.

The deal, which takes effect on November 1st, will make these protections available to every school district in the U.S., allowing districts to add them to new or existing contracts without renegotiation.

According to a fact sheet, Microsoft has agreed to provide education leaders and families with clear information about its AI products used in classrooms, including controls schools have over them and safeguards for students.

Brad Smith, Microsoft's vice chair and president, stated that the company's role is to ensure AI is provided in a form that teachers and parents can trust. He emphasized that Microsoft wants to be partners with school communities, understanding why safety is paramount in moving forward with AI technology.

The agreement addresses one of the union's 'gravest concerns' about student data and teacher interactions being monetized. Michael Mulgrew, UFT president, acknowledged that questions remain regarding how aggressive local education authorities will be in demanding AI safeguards in purchased products.
