Microsoft Axes Companion Apps for Microsoft 365 Users
Microsoft has announced that it will be retiring three companion apps for Microsoft 365 users. The affected apps are Calendar, People, and Files, which were automatically installed on Windows 11 devices with linked Microsoft 365 accounts in late 2025.
The company's vision was to provide quick access to important information such as contact details through these lightweight apps. However, despite building Copilot features into them, Microsoft has decided to pull the plug on these companion apps.
The data stored in these apps will still be accessible elsewhere, but users will need to resort to other means to access this information. For example, calendar and people information can be found in Outlook and Teams, while file storage is available through Windows Search Box, Files Explorer, SharePoint, and OneDrive.
Microsoft has confirmed that the three apps will become unsupported as of December 2026, although they won't be automatically removed from devices. Administrators will need to manually remove them for enterprises, while unmanaged PCs can simply uninstall them through the usual channel.
