Microsoft Axes Exclusive Titles in Favor of Cross-Platform Shift
Microsoft is reportedly considering a major shift in its gaming strategy, moving away from console-exclusive titles and embracing a cross-platform approach. According to Jez Corden of Windows Central, future Xbox releases will not be true exclusives, or will only feature timed exclusivity.
Corden stated that while Microsoft may still release exclusive games, these instances will be rare and typically implemented on a 'case-by-case' basis as timed exclusives. The majority of other titles will adopt a multi-platform release strategy, reducing the number of exclusive games.
The company is reportedly developing an internal system codenamed 'Project Rainway,' which aims to serve as a unified cross-platform user interface inspired by Blizzard Entertainment's Battle.net service. This platform will enable players to connect and share experiences across different hardware devices, including mobile phones, laptops, and handheld gaming devices.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella underscored this strategic shift last week, explaining that the company's future gaming focus extends beyond its proprietary Xbox consoles, aiming to allow players to enjoy Xbox games on a wide array of hardware devices.
