Microsoft Axes Internet Explorer Mode in Edge by End of 2029

Microsoft has announced that it will retire Internet Explorer Mode in its Edge browser by the end of 2029. This means that users will no longer be able to run legacy applications and websites that rely on Internet Explorer's Trident engine. The company is advising organizations to start migrating their legacy apps and websites to modern web technologies as soon as possible, as this process can take several years.

Although Internet Explorer 11 was retired many years ago, its engine is still in use via IE Mode. Microsoft has stated that it will give a new end-of-support notice at least one year before the actual date of retirement. The company has sent a message to IT administrators through the Microsoft 365 admin center reminding them of the planned retirement and advising them to prepare for migration.

IE Mode is a compatibility feature in Edge that allows web pages to be displayed using the Trident engine associated with Internet Explorer 11. This means that organizations that rely on legacy IE applications will need to evaluate their IT infrastructure, refresh or replace their applications and websites, and consider using Microsoft's App Assure service to check and improve compatibility.
