Microsoft Boosts AI Infrastructure Spending Amid Cloud Demand Surge
Microsoft is planning to invest billions more in its AI infrastructure as demand for cloud services and AI offerings continues to outstrip available capacity.
The company's cloud services revenue grew 43% year on year, with Azure revenue exceeding $100 billion for the first time. Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood described the situation as 'demand exceeding supply in a sort of relatively extreme moment.'
To meet this demand, Microsoft is increasing its capital expenditure by over 70%, from $41 billion to $50 billion, and expects to spend around $175 billion on infrastructure in calendar year 2026.
The increased investment is driven by the widespread adoption of Microsoft's AI and cloud offerings across its enterprise software and cloud businesses. The company's commercial remaining performance obligation, representing contracted revenue yet to be recognised, increased by 84% to $678 billion.
