Microsoft Brings AI Task Visibility to Windows 11 Task Manager
Microsoft has updated Task Manager in Windows 11 to include AI tasks. This update provides deeper visibility into AI workloads running on devices, allowing users to troubleshoot and report on performance, validate whether AI models are landing on the intended NPU or GPU neural engine instead of CPU or standard GPU compute, and understand and improve performance and battery life.
The new task visibility will be beneficial for IT professionals, developers, and power users. For IT professionals, it will help with troubleshooting and reporting on performance. Developers can use this information to validate their AI models and ensure they are using the intended processing resources. Power users can understand how their devices are performing under heavy AI workloads.
Microsoft is also targeting developers of AI tools and apps, who will benefit from more granular views in Task Manager specific to NPU and GPU neural engine activity. This will help them identify and correct issues related to unsupported data types or driver mismatches, which can cause applications to silently fall back to a higher-overhead compute pipeline.
