Microsoft Caps Cloud Gaming Hours for Xbox Game Pass Subscribers
Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) is capping cloud gaming hours for its Xbox Game Pass subscribers, introducing new usage-based pricing. Starting in November, Ultimate subscribers will be limited to 15 hours of cloud gaming per month, while Premium and Essential subscribers face 10-hour and 5-hour limits respectively.
The move affects around 4% of subscribers who heavily stream games, but creates a new incremental revenue stream for Microsoft through the Xbox Store. Players can purchase additional cloud gaming hours, with non-subscribers also subject to the new limits.
This change follows Microsoft's broader strategy of aligning customer payments with computing resources consumed, seen in their 2026 move to usage-based billing for GitHub Copilot.
New Xbox CEO Asha Sharma is working to improve the gaming division's financial performance, and this decision fits within that effort. The company faces pressure on Xbox content and services revenue, necessitating measures to boost profitability without undermining subscriber loyalty.
