Microsoft Confirms Windows 11 Used to Push Own Products
Microsoft has confirmed that it uses Windows 11 and other operating systems to promote its own products, including Microsoft Edge, Bing, Copilot, Teams, and Xbox Game Pass. This practice is not new, but it's still a subject of controversy among browser groups and tech companies.
The Browser Choice Alliance, backed by Google and Opera, has criticized Microsoft for restricting user choice and pushing users towards its own products. In a statement, the alliance said that Microsoft's actions 'restrict user choice, undermine web freedom, and unfairly tilt the playing field in its favor.'
Microsoft's annual SEC filing revealed that it uses Windows to fuel its cloud business and promote its services. This is not unique to Microsoft, as other tech giants like Apple and Google also use their operating systems to push their own products.
However, some have raised concerns about the extent to which Microsoft is pushing its own products at the expense of user choice. An anonymous employee claimed that Mikhail Parakhin, a former leader at Microsoft, added ads and MSN-related features to Windows 11 as part of his strategy to increase revenue.
