Microsoft Considers Abandoning Clean Energy Data Centre Targets
Microsoft may be reconsidering its ambitious clean energy targets for data centres. The company had set a goal to match 100% of its hourly electricity use with renewable energy purchases by 2030.
This target, which was seen as one of the most aggressive in the industry, could be delayed or even abandoned due to the increasing costs and energy demands of building out data centres.
According to insiders, Microsoft is weighing its options and no final decision has been made. The company's spokesperson confirmed that it continues to look for opportunities to maintain an annual matching goal, but did not comment on the hourly commitment.
The shift away from clean energy targets could be a blow to the industry's efforts to reduce emissions. As companies like Amazon and Meta prioritize getting data centres up and running quickly, natural gas is becoming a more attractive option.
