Microsoft Copilot Studio has introduced new capabilities in October 2026 aimed at enhancing business processes through persistent agents. These updates focus on continuity, context, and coordination, allowing agents to take on real responsibilities and keep work moving forward. The latest features simplify how organizations build and use agents, making it easier for makers to create solutions in familiar environments and collaborate on automation.
One key update is the integration of Copilot Studio skills in Cowork, available through the Frontier program for Microsoft 365 license holders. This allows makers to describe business needs using existing files and processes, then design agents, apps, and workflows to address those needs. For example, an HR specialist can create an employee onboarding solution without prior technical knowledge, combining apps, workflows, and agents to manage the process.
The new Microsoft Copilot Studio Model Context Protocol (MCP) server enables makers to bring Copilot Studio capabilities into supported development tools. This allows for natural-language instructions to discover resources, create agents, run tests, and troubleshoot issues, all while maintaining governance and organizational permissions. Additionally, simplifications to the connector configuration experience allow makers to connect third-party services directly from their conversations, reducing the need for context switching.
Agents in Copilot Studio can now be persistent and proactive, using their own approved credentials and scoped permissions to carry out work. Business process memory helps them maintain context over time, while triggers allow them to begin work in response to events or schedules. This shift enables agents to take on ongoing business responsibilities, freeing up human teams to focus on decision-making.
The new customer conversation harness in Copilot Studio, now in preview, provides a purpose-built framework for building customer-facing agents across voice and chat. This harness supports multi-agent architecture, allowing for specialized sub-agents and escalation paths to human representatives. Built-in testing, evaluation, deployment, and monitoring capabilities ensure efficient and scalable customer engagement experiences.
With the general availability of Work IQ in Copilot Studio, agents can now draw on a unified intelligence layer that understands context across Microsoft 365 and business applications. This enhances agents' ability to respond and act with a better understanding of the work at hand. Additionally, three workflow enhancements have reached general availability, expanding the capabilities and collaboration options for organizations using Copilot Studio.
