Microsoft Copilot Transforms into AI Operating System, Drives Stock Rerating Expectations
Oppenheimer analyst Brian Schwartz says Microsoft's latest Copilot announcement marks a significant shift in the company's AI strategy. He describes the product as an 'AI operating system', which can drive higher user engagement, create more monetization opportunities, and build greater customer stickiness.
Schwartz believes this transformation is substantial and will push Microsoft deeper into the AI win category. The analyst notes that when a company becomes an operating system or platform provider, it leads to higher engagement, greater monetization opportunities, and stickiness against competition.
The analyst also highlights new capabilities in Copilot, including Cowork, co-development, and Autopilot, which can be monetized through consumption-based pricing, credits, and tokens. This could create incremental growth opportunities for Microsoft 365 and Azure, supporting his expectation of business acceleration over the coming quarters.
Schwartz points to Azure's current growth in the low-40% range and expects it to accelerate toward the mid-40% range in the current quarter. If Azure growth approaches 50% while operating at a scale exceeding $100 billion, Schwartz says this could drive a rerating of Microsoft stock.
