Microsoft Cracks Down on Pirated Software with TPM-Enabled KMS Restrictions

Microsoft has announced that it will soon be rolling out stricter new restrictions for users of pirated software, excluding temporary system bugs. The move is aimed at addressing a vulnerability in its Key Management Service (KMS), which has been exploited by users to activate Windows and Office software without paying for them.

KMS was originally developed by Microsoft as a tool for large enterprises to activate their software in batches. However, it soon became a popular tool among computer technicians and users who wanted to avoid buying genuine licenses. The KMS activation method involves simulating a server that returns a response that can pass Microsoft's verification, allowing Windows systems to be activated without a genuine license.

However, Microsoft has found that this vulnerability is about 20 years old and has finally decided to fix it by requiring hardware to support Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 to activate software via a server. This means that even if someone simulates KMS in the future, they will not be able to activate the system without a Microsoft-certified TPM.

The change will not take effect immediately and is expected to be implemented in the next generation of Windows Server. Enterprises will have time to prepare for upgrades and ensure that their existing KMS hosts can meet the new requirements.
