Microsoft Discloses $24B in Revenue from OpenAI Partnership
Microsoft's annual report for fiscal year 2026 has raised eyebrows due to several accounting changes, which have attracted attention from investors and financial experts. One of the notable changes is the disclosure of revenue generated by Microsoft's partnership with OpenAI. According to the report, Microsoft holds a 25% interest in OpenAI, which it accounts for using the equity method of accounting.
Under this method, Microsoft records its investment at cost and adjusts the carrying value based on its proportionate share of OpenAI's net income or loss. The company has disclosed that it recognized $24.1 billion in revenue from commercial arrangements with OpenAI in 2026, including revenue-sharing payments. It also reported accounts receivable from OpenAI totaling $6.0 billion as of June 30, 2026.
Another significant change is the extension of the estimated useful lives of certain buildings, which will impact Microsoft's capital expenditure and free cash flow metrics. Additionally, the company has announced a shift in classification of a portion of its future lease obligations from finance leases to operating leases, which may affect investors' interpretation of these metrics.
The changes in accounting disclosures have sparked interest among financial experts, who are analyzing their implications for Microsoft's financial performance and the broader AI ecosystem. The company's partnership with OpenAI has been a key focus area for investors, given its potential for generating significant revenue and driving innovation in artificial intelligence.
