Microsoft Disputes GTA 6 Preorder Skew Towards PlayStation 5
Microsoft has responded to claims that GTA 6 preorders are heavily skewed towards the PlayStation 5 over Xbox Series X and S. The company's CSO, Matthew Ball, insisted that its internal data shows preorders matching the console market share.
The controversy arose from a report by Tom Warren at The Verge, which stated that PS5 dominance in GTA 6 preorders was 'ringing yet more alarm bells' about Xbox as a platform. However, Microsoft is 'very happy' with GTA 6 preorders, according to Ball, and expects even more records to be broken throughout the fall.
Ball's statement comes at a time when Sony has heavily leaned into the partnership with Rockstar Games for GTA 6, which includes showcasing PS5 features in marketing materials. This has led to some analysts suggesting that preorders are skewed towards the PS5.
The exact number of preorders for each console is not publicly disclosed, but Ball's statement suggests that Xbox's share is in line with its market share. The combined sales of Xbox Series X and S have been estimated to be lower than the PS5 by a factor of at least 2:1 as of June 30.
GTA 6 launches on November 19 for both PS5 and Xbox Series X and S.
