Microsoft Ditches 'AI for All' Approach in Favor of Process Overhaul
Microsoft's Frontier Playbook has revealed that access to AI tools alone does not transform how a company works. The company spent years giving its employees access to various AI tools, but saw limited productivity improvements.
The 44-page playbook, which draws on over 100 internal projects across Microsoft's 220,000-plus workforce, recommends that organizations simplify workflows and redesign roles before layering agents onto existing processes.
This approach was taken by Microsoft's cloud supply chain team, who mapped and stripped down procedures first, then introduced purpose-built agents across logistics and sourcing. The result was a reduction in cycle times of up to 75% across select workflows.
The playbook also suggests that enterprises preserve their own institutional knowledge and design systems so the underlying foundation model can be changed without rebuilding everything around it.
