Microsoft Ditches AMD from Current Surface Laptops Due to Portfolio Size

Microsoft has shed light on why AMD chips are absent from its current Surface lineup. In an interview, Microsoft Surface CVP Brett Ostrum stated that the decision comes down to portfolio size rather than any issue with AMD itself.

Ostrum said, 'We love working with AMD. We have a limited portfolio, and so we have to make our choices pretty wisely in terms of what we're doing and where we're doing it.'

AMD did actually have a run in Surface before, with the Surface Laptop 3 launched in 2019 offering an AMD option alongside Intel.

The current lineup includes Intel, Qualcomm's Snapdragon X2, and soon NVIDIA's custom RTX Spark chip in the upcoming Surface Laptop Ultra. However, this new lineup includes no AMD silicon.
