Microsoft Ditches AMD Processors from Surface Lineup
Microsoft has confirmed that it has not used AMD processors in its Surface lineup for over five years, and it's not planning to return anytime soon.
The company's Corporate Vice President of Surface, Brett Ostrum, explained that the reason behind this decision is a matter of capacity and focus. Microsoft's Surface lineup is relatively small compared to other PC manufacturers like Dell or Lenovo, with only a handful of core product lines such as the Surface Laptop and Surface Pro.
As a result, Microsoft has to make its choices very carefully when it comes to selecting silicon partners. It can't support every chipmaker at once, which is why Intel and Qualcomm have become the dominant players in the Surface lineup, with Nvidia reportedly set to join them soon.
