Microsoft Ditches Copilot+ PC Branding for Windows 11 Devices
Microsoft has quietly dropped its Copilot+ PC branding for Windows 11 devices without a formal announcement. The branding, which was introduced in 2024 alongside the first Windows on Arm devices powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon processors, referred to hardware that met a minimum AI performance threshold to run local Copilot+ AI tools.
The Copilot+ PC brand was tied to Microsoft's flagship tool, Recall, but it drew criticism for taking screenshots of users' PC environments with little regard for privacy and minimal security for AI-powered historical search. Despite the controversy, new Surface PCs from Microsoft still meet the former requirements and support local AI, just without the branding.
NVIDIA's upcoming RTX Spark laptops also avoid the Copilot+ PC label, despite meeting the minimum AI performance threshold of 45 TOPS previously required to earn a Copilot+ PC badge. This suggests that Microsoft is abandoning the brand altogether, possibly due to a lack of interest in Copilot as an AI tool.
