Microsoft Ditches Live Chat in Teams After Barely 18 Months

Microsoft is phasing out its Live Chat feature in Teams, just 18 months after its launch. The function allowed businesses using Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Standard, and Premium plans to add a support widget to their websites, directing customer queries to Teams. Up to 25 employees could handle conversations, setting working hours or assigning tasks to an AI bot from Copilot Studio.

New setups have been blocked since August 6, with full support ending on October 5, 2026. Microsoft advises organisations to remove the live chat widget before this date and inform support staff about the change. Those requiring live chat can consider alternatives like Dynamics 365 Contact Center or Copilot Studio.

This move is part of a broader clear-out of Teams features this year, following the withdrawal of the Together Mode option earlier this month. The Whiteboard function will be phased out soon as well.
