Microsoft Ditches Windows PowerShell 5.1 Support in Graph SDK
Microsoft has begun a 12-month transition period to retire support for Windows PowerShell 5.1 in its Graph PowerShell SDK. This move aims to simplify development and reduce reliability issues caused by dependency and assembly-loading challenges. As part of this effort, Graph PowerShell v3.0 will focus exclusively on supporting PowerShell 7.x and later.
Organizations currently running automation scripts on Windows PowerShell 5.1 risk falling behind as Microsoft shifts its focus elsewhere. Although existing scripts are expected to function during the transition period, customers who remain on the legacy platform will no longer receive platform-specific bug fixes. Administrators may need to revisit their automation environments and scripts hosted in services like Azure Automation to ensure they remain supported.
Microsoft recommends a gradual transition to PowerShell 7.x, which it views as the long-term foundation for the Graph PowerShell ecosystem. The company plans to release Graph PowerShell v3.0 in Q4 2026, with support focused on PowerShell 7.x and later. Customers who make this transition will gain a more modern and potentially more reliable platform but must invest time in migration planning, script validation, and runtime upgrades.
