Microsoft Engineer Reveals Secret Behind Leaked Windows XP Key
Microsoft's Windows XP copy protection has been shrouded in mystery for years. A recent X post from former engineer Dave Plummer shed light on how a well-known leak, FCKGW-RHQQ2-YXRKT-8TG6W-2B7Q8, occurred. This leaked key allowed users to install and run Windows XP without activation.
The original Windows XP media came in two versions: Retail and Volume. The former was for individual purchases, while the latter was reserved for Microsoft partners and OEMs that needed to mass-install the OS on thousands of machines.
The leaked key was likely from a Volume license, which required only one CD to install and activate the operating system. This was done intentionally by Microsoft to accommodate large-scale installations without requiring individual activation for each machine.
