Microsoft Executives Admit AI Models are Stealing Content, Creating 'Doom Loop'
Unsealed court documents have revealed that top Microsoft figures, including CEO Satya Nadella, have admitted to creating a 'doom loop' that threatens the economic foundations of media companies. This destructive one-way relationship between AI companies and media platforms has been described by Microsoft director Brent Hecht as a 'doo-loop' that will hurt both the performance of their models and the entire web at the same time.
The issue stems from AI companies like OpenAI stealing content from media companies without providing any value in return, leaving them with useless models. In internal documents, Microsoft leadership acknowledged that their AI content strategy has created a situation where an end-product threatens the economic foundations of its essential suppliers.
Court documents also show that OpenAI's cofounder Greg Brockman was aware of employees finding ways to bypass paywalls without detection, with one employee telling him about a 'hack' to get around the New York Times' paywall. When asked about it, Brockman simply replied, 'ah nice.'
