Microsoft Expands Backwards Compatibility on PC with Emulation
Microsoft is planning to expand its backwards compatible program on PC, allowing players to play Xbox 360 games on their Windows PCs via emulation. According to leaked documents obtained by The Verge, this expansion will start with the release of original Xbox (OG) games in October 2026, followed by the availability of Xbox 360 games sometime between 2027 and 2028.
The documents also reveal details about Microsoft's 'disc to digital' scheme, which will allow players to translate physical copies of their games into digital licenses. This license can then be used on PC or even transferred to other players if the game is sold or given away.
Microsoft will handle the technical side of this delivery, including engineering, emulator development, title-by-title certification and testing, storefront merchandising, and player support. Meanwhile, publishers retain control over brand rights and pricing, providing they opt-in to the program.
