Microsoft has deepened its collaboration with Nvidia, marking a significant step in its artificial intelligence strategy. The company unveiled the Surface Laptop Ultra, powered by Nvidia's RTX Spark chip, allowing users to run AI models directly on their devices. Starting at $2,599, this laptop will hit stores on October 16, alongside AI-powered PCs from Dell, HP, and Lenovo. Microsoft also introduced the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box for developers, priced at $5,999, set to ship in November.
Microsoft's financial performance remains robust, with revenue reaching $90 billion in its latest fiscal fourth quarter, an 18% year-over-year increase. Adjusted earnings grew 23% to $4.74 per share. Analysts project revenue to climb 17% to $390.2 billion for fiscal 2027, with earnings expected to rise 9% to $19.65 per share. Fiscal 2028 forecasts suggest further growth of 18% in both sales and earnings per share.
Despite strong growth prospects, Microsoft's earnings estimate revisions have been largely stagnant. The fiscal 2027 EPS consensus edged up slightly from $19.63 to $19.65 over the past 60 days, while fiscal 2028 estimates dipped from $23.30 to $23.24. The stock trades at a premium valuation of 27X forward earnings, above its industry average and the S&P 500, reflecting its leadership in cloud computing and AI opportunities.
Analysts caution that Microsoft's high expectations leave it vulnerable to volatility if Azure growth slows or AI investments pressure profitability. While the company's long-term AI growth story is compelling, its shares have seen only a modest 9% year-to-date gain. This suggests investors may be looking for other high-growth opportunities with stronger near-term momentum. Consequently, Microsoft stock currently holds a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
