Microsoft Extends Life of Legacy Servers with Azure Arc ESUs

Microsoft has introduced Azure Arc-enabled Extended Security Updates (ESUs) for Windows Server 2016, allowing businesses to continue receiving critical security patches through January 2030. This move gives organizations more time to protect their legacy servers as they approach the end of support on January 12, 2027.

With ESUs, companies can enroll eligible servers connected via Azure Arc and receive security updates without migrating workloads to Azure virtual machines. This new offering supports servers running on-premises, at the edge, or in other cloud environments, providing a supported bridge for business-critical applications that need more time to migrate.

Azure Arc-enabled ESUs offer flexible pay-as-you-go pricing, allowing organizations to purchase coverage as needed rather than committing to a long-term upfront contract. Additionally, this service provides a simplified, cloud-based experience with direct enrollment through Azure and centralized administration.
