Microsoft Eyes In-Game Ads for Xbox Consoles
Microsoft has filed a patent that could bring in-game ads to Xbox consoles. The patent, titled 'Contextually Aware Management of Interactive Software Application Access', describes a system where ads are injected at predictable times during gameplay.
The ads would pause the game and award players with credits upon completion. These credits can be used to extend access to the game for a limited amount of time, ranging from 15 minutes to an hour.
According to the patent, these ad breaks would occur during natural pauses in the game, such as loading screens or after a boss fight. This system is designed to work on both locally installed and streamed titles, covering all platforms including consoles, PCs, phones, and other smart devices.
While this patent has sparked concerns among gamers, Microsoft has filed many patents that never come into effect. The company's history with implementing patented technology also suggests that it may take a long time for these in-game ads to arrive on Xbox consoles.
